Durga Puja is a festival which celebrates the victory of good over evil as Maa Durga defeated the demon Mahisasura to bring an end to his bad deeds

1. Mahisasur was born as a son to the demon king Rambha and his wife Princess Shyamala who had taken the form of a buffalo due to a curse

2. Due to this unusual union, Mahisasur had the ability to change himself into either a man or buffalo

3. He pleased Lord Brahma by meditating on Him for many years

4. On being pleased with his strict penance, Lord Brahma appeared before Him and decided to give him any boon he wished

5. Mahisasur asked Lord Brahma to bless him with the boon that no man, animal or God should be able to kill him

6. Although Lord Brahma granted him his wish, he was warned that a woman will end his life

7. Being proud of his power, Mahisasur waged wars and conquered the heavens from the Gods

8. The Gods on being unable to defeat Mahisasur due to the boon that he had received finally went to Lord Vishnu

9. Lord Vishnu together came with Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma and they combined all their powers to give rise to Goddess Durga who killed Mahisasur

10. Mahisasur’s army along with him was killed by Goddess Durga on Maha Ashtami
