The person who wrote Vande Mataram is Bankim Chandra Chatterjee who was born and brought up in Naihati, a city in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal

Popularly known as Sahitya Samrat (Emperor of Literature) in Bengali, Chatterjee, who was born on June 26, 1838, wrote his debut novel Rajmohan’s Wife in English

Chatterjee, who obtained a degree in law, went on to write fourteen novels including in his mother tongue Bengali

Most of his novels provide strong message of women empowerment as it speaks volumes about the strength and risky, brave moves made by women for survival

One of his novels Devi Chaudurani became an inspiration for women to come out of their homes and join the independence struggle against the British

Chatterjee, who served as a  Deputy Magistrate & Deputy Collector of the British led Indian government, wrote his first Bengali novel Durgeshnandini which was published in 1865

The most popular Bengali novel of Chatterjee remains Anandamath as it is the source from where Vande Mataram was adopted as the National Song of India in October 1937 by the Congress

Chatterjee who wrote  several articles for several newspapers and magazines to address social and political issues of the time even founded the Bengali literary magazine Bangadarshan in 1872

He was able to highly influence most stalwarts of that time like Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa
