Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma invited all national and international tourists to visit the state on the occasion of World Tourism Day
World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on September 27 to highlight the significance of tourism in fostering cultural exchange, economic growth and sustainable development
“Assam, the land of red river and blue hills, mesmerises people from all walks of life by its pristine beauty,” Sarma wrote in a post on X
“On #WorldTourismDay2023, I invite all national and international tourists to visit & explore the State to get enchanted with the beauty of #AwesomeAssam,” he added
The theme for World Tourism Day 2023 is “Tourism and Green Investments”
This theme emphasizes the importance of making tourism more sustainable and environmentally friendly
United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly decided to institute World Tourism Day in the year 1980
According to UNWTO, tourism employs one in every ten people on Earth
It also claims that tourism in rural areas can particularly benefit traditionally disadvantaged groups such as women - who make up 54% of the workforce in the tourism sector compared to 39% for the whole economy - youth and Indigenous people
