Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended his best wishes to 41.7 lakh players participating in Khel Maharan from November 1, 2023
Khel Maharan, which is Assam’s biggest sporting extravaganza, is scheduled to be held up to January 10, 2024
Taking to X, Sarma wrote, “As Assam's biggest sporting extravaganza – Khel Maharan begins today, my best wishes to all 41.7 lakh players”
“Let the fervour of sports strengthen our unity and may the best players win!” he added
The competition will feature five disciplines- athletics, football, volleyball, kabaddi, and kho-kho
The teams for this sporting event will initially form at the village level, with the best players advancing to the gaon panchayat/ward level teams.
The selected players will then join the assembly constituency-level teams before progressing to the district-level teams for state-level competitions
The state-level competitions will take place at six venues and the matches will be held in two categories- Under-19 and Above 19- for both male and female participants
The six location where the state-level competitions are being planned to be held include Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Silchar and Diphu
The theme song of Khel Maharan has been sung by Zubeen Garg
Meanwhile, the mascot for this biggest sporting extravaganza is Maharaj Dodan, who is believed to be the forefather of the Rabha tribe, nephew of Maharaj Bana & related to Devi Usha in the Mahabharata
