Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently described the importance of popular cultural complex Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra in the development of the state on the occasion of its 26th anniversary
Sarma, in a post on X, expressed gratitude towards the people responsible for building this cultural complex of Assam
“Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra is the life centre of our state’s art and culture. Kalakshetra was formed 26 years ago and was named after the renowned personality of our state,” he wrote
“I deeply remember and express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every person involved in the establishment of this shrine that is a a melting pot of arts and cultures of different ethnic groups,” he added
“ I would also like to extend my best wishes to everyone associated with this great institution at present. May Sankardev Kalakshetra achieve more name and fame in the future too,” he added
Sankardev Kalakshetra was inaugurated on November 9, 1988 by the then President of India K.R. Narayanan
Kalakshetra was conceived by the Cultural Advisory Committee of the Government of Assam in a meeting held on August 5, 1986
The state government decided to set up Kalakshtra with an aim of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the people of Assam
The open air theatres, auditoriums and halls of Kalakshetra are the avenues where different programmes are held each day
It also houses museums and parks so that people can enjoy themselves and learn more about the art and culture of Assam
