The Durand Cup which is an annual domestic football tournament will be held for the first time in Assam

A total of 10 football matches of Durand Cup are scheduled to be held at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati from August 17, 2022 to September 4, 2022

The 134-year-old historic football tournament was started in Shimla in 1888

The Durand Cup has been named after its founder Mortimer Durand who was the foreign secretary of British India from 1884 to 1894

It was initially conducted as a football tournament for different departments and regiments of armed forces of British India and was opened to civilians much later

After India gained Independence, the Indian Army took the responsibility of conducting this oldest football tournament

The most unique feature of Durand Cup is that the winning team is presented with three trophies unlike other tournaments where the winner gets only one trophy

The three trophies includes the President’s Cup, Shimla Cup and the Durand Cup

The Durand Cup is the original prize of the football tournament

The President’s Cup came to be given traditionally after it was handed for the first time to the winners by India’s first president Dr. Rajendra Prasad post independence

The Shimla Cup was first awarded in 1903 by the residents of Shimla and since 1965 it came to be presented regularly to the winners

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who unveiled the three trophies of Durand Cup urged the people of the state to enjoy the matches

He said that the government is arranging special buses for spectators of the Durand Cup
