Two pro-talk ULFA leaders Mrinal Hazarika and Jiten Dutta have been detained in connection with the killing of five innocent civilians at Kherbari in Tinsukia district.
The Panbazar police detained pro-talk ULFA leader Hazarika on the suspicion of his role in the massacre. Hazarika has been in news for the last few days for his strong rhetoric against NDA’s move to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
Pro- talk ULFA leader Jiten Dutta was also detained on Friday morning at Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district. Dutta was picked up around 11 am when he was on his way to Tinsukia (from Guwahati), officials said. He is now being taken to Guwahati for questioning.
As members of Lachit Sena have threatened to block the national highway in protest against Dutta’s detention, he is being taken to Guwahati under tight security. One additional superintendent of police is leading the convoy.
Like Hazarika, Dutta has also been vocal against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s plan to implement the Citizenship Amendment Bill and had threatened of bloodbath in Assam against the move to grant citizenship to Hindu migrants from Bangladesh.
Both Mrinal Hazarika and Jiten Dutta have been vocal against BJP legislator Shiladitya Dev for his support to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. Hazarika was also summoned in Panbazar police station last week for “threatening” the BJP legislator.
