Agartala: The Tripura Assembly session on Monday witnessed repeated protests by Opposition legislators, prompting Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia to order the suspension of Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman.

The remaining Congress MLAs and CPI(M) legislators later staged a walkout to register their protest against the Speaker’s decision.

The pandemonium hit the Assembly after Roy Barman attempted to draw the attention of the House to the ‘existence of a suicide note’ allegedly left by DGP Anurag, who, as far as the investigation suggests, died by suicide in the washroom attached to his office chamber.

Roy Barman also claimed that the ‘suicide note’ had disappeared from the place of occurrence on the instructions of some vested-interest quarters allegedly trying to influence the investigation and hinted at a conspiracy.

He also launched an attack on the Chief Minister and the contents of his statement made in the Assembly a few days ago regarding the unnatural death of the DGP.

The issue was raised by Roy Barman during the Zero Hour amid an uproar in the House. He alleged that the DGP’s wife, who arrived in Tripura on Sunday, had sought the suicide note reportedly written by her husband before his death and said she had a photograph of the note.

Roy Barman alleged that the original suicide note had mysteriously disappeared. The issue gained traction when CPI(M) MLAs extended their support to the matter and demanded that it be discussed in the Assembly.

Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia intervened and asked Roy Barman to stop. He said the issue could not be discussed in the House since the Chief Minister, being the Leader of the House, had already made a statement on the matter.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath also reacted to the issue and asked the Congress MLA to place evidence related to the claims he had made during the Assembly proceedings.

Meanwhile, Opposition MLAs carrying placards and posters proceeded to the well of the House in protest. The protesting legislators demanded that the suicide note be placed before the House.

The protests led to a heated exchange between legislators of the treasury and Opposition benches.

In an attempt to restore calm and allow the proceedings to continue, the Speaker issued three warnings to the Congress MLA to leave the House and then declared that he had been suspended for the day.

Despite the announcement, the protests continued for a few minutes.

The watch and ward guards, who had been surrounding the protesting legislators in the well of the House, were later instructed to escort Roy Barman out of the Assembly.

He subsequently left the House, while all Opposition MLAs staged a walkout in protest.

While leaving the House, Roy Barman reportedly abused the Speaker and shouted invectives at him. As the microphones were switched off, the exact words could not be heard clearly, but Roy Barman’s aggressive conduct drew attention.

Later, while briefing media persons, the Congress MLA said that if he was proved wrong, he would tender his resignation as an MLA.

Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia also expressed his sharp disappointment over the language and what he described as the aggressively offensive conduct displayed by the Congress MLA.

“The Congress MLA during the Assembly proceedings made extremely offensive remarks against the Speaker. Such unparliamentary attitude is not acceptable,” Jamatia told media persons after the House was adjourned for lunch.

The ruling party argued that a matter which is still being investigated could not be discussed, disregarding the sensitive nature of the matter.
