In a gunfight with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, a suspected Rohingya drug dealer was shot dead on Sunday morning.

Sources informed that the incident took place at Jadimura Point of Naf River in Shekolghera area of Hnila union.

The suspected drug dealer has been identified as 25-year-old Mohammad Ayas, a resident of the Kutupalang Rohingya camp 2 in Ukhia.

“After receiving a specific input about the possible drug trade, we launched an operation at Jadimura Point,” said BGB Teknaf 2 Commanding Officer Lt Col Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan.

“We noticed that several persons arrived on a boat from Myanmar’s Laldip area direction,” Khan added.

“When we tried to stop the boat, the people on board fired on us. And when we fired in retaliation, the suspected drug dealer was shot dead,” Khan further said.

He further informed that Ayas’ three associated managed to escape from the scene.

Three BGB officials were also injured during the gunfight. They received first aid at Teknaf Upazila Health Complex.

BGB also recovered a locally-made gun, a bullet, a bullet shell and 220,000 yaba tablets.
