A Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) was opened at the Mangaldai head post office campus on Saturday.

The POPSK will be completely under the control of the Regional Passport Office based in Guwahati.

The POPSK will function with effect from February 15 next with the initial capacity of receiving and verifying documents of maximum fifteen applicants per day.

The Seva Kendra has been formally opened in the old building campus of the post office at Mangaldai by Mangaldai Lok Sabha MP Ramen Deka.

The ceremonial opening function of the Kendra, which is reportedly first of its kind in the Brahmaputra Valley, was also attended by two MLAs of the ruling BJP, Gurujyoti Das and Binanda Kr Saikia.

Besides, the inaugural function was also attended by Regional Passport Officer Lobsang Tsering and other senior officials of the Regional Passport office and the Postal Department among others.

Earlier, the first POPSK in the Northeast was inaugurated in Silchar in March last year.

The POPSK at Silchar covers Barak Valley and Dima Hasao.

While inaugurating the POPSK at Silchar in the premises of the office of the Senior Superintendent of Cachar PO, Assam PWD Minister Parimal Suklabaidya said, “The opening of a POPSK may not be a major thing but the people of south Assam can breathe easy now.”

In June, 2017, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Department of Posts (DOP) notified that Tura and Baghmara in Meghalaya would function as Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs).

In February 2017, then Union Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh announced that nine new Passport Seva Kendras would be set up in Assam.
