The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that it is not withdrawing the Rs 2000 notes to reissue Rs 1000 note after December 31, 2019, as claimed by a viral WhatsApp message.

“After 31st December 2019 you cannot change your Rs 2,000 notes,” the viral WhatsApp forward states, further claiming that RBI is reissuing Rs 1,000 note.

“Rs 2,000 noteholders can only exchange Rs 50,000 as the Rs 1,000 notes will be in circulation from January 1, 2020,” the message adds.

“These are all rumours. RBI has not issued such a notification. Please refer to the website for all communication,” an RBI statement said

Reportedly, it was in October this year that the message began doing rounds after an RTI application revealed that the RBI has stopped printing Rs 2,000 notes.
