New CDS after Bipin Rawat unlikely to be announced soon

It has been almost a month since the demise of late General Bipin Rawat and now reports are claiming that process of selecting the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) is likely to take more time.

As per a report on The Print, although there has been a discussion on who might be the next CDS, government sources claimed that “as of now”, serving officers are in contention.

It may be mentioned that India’s service chiefs are supposed to retire after a three-year tenure or at the age of 62.

The retirement age for the CDS is 65 years and General Bipin Rawat was India’s first CDS. He took charge on January 1, 2020.

Chief of Defence staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash in December 2021.

After his demise, the IAF said, “With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident.”
