2021 was a year of drought and flood. The extreme weather events wrought havoc on the lives of numerous cultivators.
On one hand when cyclones Taukte and Yaas caused an unprecedented amount of damage to crops in states of Odisha, Gujarat and West Bengal, over a fifth of India faced drought-like conditions.
This was 62% more than the area that was under drought in 2020. Some parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and some north-eastern states like Nagaland were under severe drought conditions.
Data released by Drought Early Warning System (DEWS) showed that 1.63% of the area is under extremely dry conditions, and 2.17% of cultivable land was under ‘severe’ dry conditions. All over 7.38% of the area was under abnormally dry conditions.
“While it is very difficult to prevent crop loss during the cyclonic floods but crop failures because of far-fetched droughts can be prevented if the right steps are taken,” says the director of Oriplast, H.V Aggarwal.
He added that drip irrigation is helping people to cultivate crops in arid regions like Israel and the north-eastern state of Sikkim. He wishes to take steps to educate farmers about these methods in the coming times.
Unlike other irrigation methods, the drip technique relies on minimal water usage. It was built by setting up a web of pipes and faucets that constantly water the plants drop by drop.
Best for arid regions and ideal for crops that require low to medium water supply including some varieties of cash crops, drip can prove to be the best irrigation system in these regions that remain on drought alert.
Oriplast CEO, H.V Aggarwal says that the Indian market can offer great flexibility in the inputs of this system as there are many varieties of pipes, faucets and water storage tanks available to suit the needs of small, medium and big farmlands.
