Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced on May 12 that the state government is planning a long-term development drive for Tura, with investments of about Rs 2,000 crore intended at changing the town’s urban landscape.

Following a review meeting, the chief minister stated that discussions focused on the status of ongoing development activities as well as forthcoming strategic projects for the town.

“A review was conducted to assess the progress of ongoing development projects and deliberate on strategic upcoming initiatives for Tura,” Sangma wrote in a social media post.

He stated that the government’s “collective vision” is to implement “transformative infrastructure interventions” that will gradually modernise the town over the next few years.

According to Sangma, projects worth roughly Rs 200 crore have already been completed, providing “a solid foundation for the more extensive works to follow”.

The proposedย development strategy is expected to include urban infrastructure, connectivity, and public amenities as part of a larger effort to improve Tura’s civic environment. However, the chief minister did not disclose timetables for the remaining projects or a comprehensive sector breakdown of the projected investments.

Tura, the headquarters of the West Garo Hills district, has seen a number of government-led infrastructure initiatives in recent years as Meghalaya strives for better urban development outside Shillong.
