Kalicharan Maharaj, a religious leader, has been arrested for allegedly giving derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi. 

Kalicharan Maharaj was arrested from Madhya Pradesh’s Khajuraho by a team of Chhattisgarh police. 

“Raipur Police arrested him at 4 in the morning today. By evening, the police team will reach Raipur with the accused,” Raipur SP said. 

“I salute Nathuram Godse that he killed Gandhi,” Kalicharan had said while speaking at an event at Raipur earlier.

The Chhattisgarh police arrested the religious leader based on a FIR lodged by Congress leader Pramod Dubey. 

“Kalicharan Maharaj’s family and lawyer have been informed about his arrest by Chhattisgarh police. He will be presented before the court within 24 hours,” said Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel. 

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Police has taken into custody the owner of the home-stay in Khajuraho, where Kalicharan Maharaj was lodged. 

On December 19, he made derogatory comments about Christians and Muslims at an event in Pune.
