Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday said that delaying the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games may be the only option left to avoid worsening the coronavirus pandemic that has engulfed the entire world.
Abe’s remarks came a day after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that it would decide the fate of the games after further discussion with organizers.
Abe had previously expressed “confidence” of holding the sporting extravaganza.
Speaking during a Parliamentary session on Monday Abe said, “When it comes to hosting the 2020 Games, I don’t believe the world is in any condition to do so at this time.”
