India, on Monday, successfully test fired the supersonic missile assisted torpedo (SMART) off the coast of Balasore in Odisha.
The SMART weapon system has been developed by the defence research and development organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Navy.
“The system has been designed to enhance anti-submarine warfare capability far beyond the conventional range of torpedo,” the DRDO stated.
The test was done from Wheeler Island in Odisha.
The long-range SMART weapon system is a next-generation missile-based standoff torpedo delivery system.
Full range capability of the SMART weapons system was successfully demonstrated during the course of the test.
The missile carried a torpedo, parachute delivery system and release mechanisms.
The missile was launched from a ground mobile launcher, which can cover a range of distances.
