India reports third COVID-19 case of Omicron variant

India has reported the third COVID-19 case of the deadly Omicron variant.

The fresh Omicron case has been detected at Jamnagar in Gujarat.

The person, who has been tested positive for Omicron had recently returned from Zimbabwe.

“His sample has been sent to Pune,” the Gujarat health department informed.

“A person has been found to be positive for Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Jamnagar. He has been put under isolation and is being monitored. A micro containment zone has also been made where he is living,” the Gujarat health department further said.

“A 72-year-old man who had arrived from Zimbabwe tested COVID positive. After studying genome sequencing, Omicron variant was confirmed. The patient is in isolation and is stable. We are following the SOP to tackle the situation,” deputy commissioner of Jamnagar district in Gujrat – Dr Sourabh Pardhi said.

Earlier on Thursday, 2 cases of Omicron variant were detected in Karnataka.

The Omicron variant were detected in 2 male foreign returnees in Karnataka.

Thus far, a total of 24 countries including India have reported Omicron cases.

Meanwhile, the world health organisation (WHO) had stated that detection of Omicron variant of COVID-19 in India was “not unexpected”.
