Government to supply free food grain to stranded migrants

As part of PM’s Special Economic Measures, Government of India has allocated free food grain for the migrants, who are not covered under National Food Security Act (NFSA) or State Scheme PDS Cards, @ 5 kg per person per month free of cost for the months of May and June.

Senior officials of Food Corporation of India said to mitigate the plight of the migrant workers during this precarious COVID19 situation, free ration will be provided for two months.

Government of India will bear the entire cost for free distribution of food grains, including food subsidy, intra-state transportation, dealer’s margin/additional dealers’ margin etc. without any sharing by the states and union territories.

The FCI officials informed that 351,320 quintals of free rice has been allotted under the scheme as additional allotment for seven states of Northeast India.

The government has directed Food Corporation of India (FCI) to supply free food grain to the respective state government for further distribution to the migrants.

The FCI has requested all Secretaries of Food and Civil Supplies of the Northeast India states to immediately lift the rice allotted under the scheme.

All the field offices of FCI in Northeast India have also been directed to supply free rice to the state governments on requisition, the officials said.

It has also been informed by FCI that adequate food grains are available in the depots in all seven states to meet the demand under all schemes including NFSA, PMGKAY and additional allotment under new scheme for migrants.
