The first democratically elected President of Maldives and current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed was injured in a blast late Thursday.
According to Maldives Police, Mohamed Nasheed is currently being treated at ADK Hospital.
The blast took place near Nasheed’s home at G Kenereege in Male’s Neeloafaru Magu while he was entering his car in his residence.
Immediately after the explosion, the police have cordoned the area and have urged the public to refrain from going there.
“Following an explosion on Neeloafaru Magu in Malé, Speaker of Parliament President Mohamed Nasheed has sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at ADK Hospital,” Maldives Police tweeted.
“Police are currently active on the scene and we urge the public to refrain from going to that area for the time being. We will keep updating the public,” Maldives Police added.

India’s external affairs minister Dr S jaishankar has expressed deep concern over the incident and wished speedy recovery of Mohamed Nasheed.
“Deeply concerned at the attack on Speaker @MohamedNasheed. Wish him a speedy recovery. Know that he will never be intimidated,” Dr Jaishankar tweeted.

Nasheed, 53, won multi-party elections in 2008.
But he was ousted in a coup four years later.
According to reports, an explosive device had been fastened to a motorbike that was parked nearby.
