Former Uttar Pradesh cadre IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, who earlier announced candidature against chief minister Yogi Adityanath, was put under house arrest on Saturday.
This has been revealed by the former IPS officer.
Amitabh Thakur was put under house arrest just ahead of his planned visit to Gorakhpur.
Thakur in a video message said when he was preparing to leave for Gorakhpur, the Gomti Nagar police reached his home and told him that he can’t go ahead with the planned visit citing security reasons.
In the video, Thakur further said the police didn’t allow him to go out of his residence even when he asked them to provide him security instead of cancelling his scheduled visit.
“I sent a letter to them and they gave me a bizarre response. They said that I couldn’t visit Gorakhpur and Faizabad due to the self-immolation of a couple outside the Supreme Court,” Thakur said.
“The woman had alleged rape by an MP and they said that it had led to anger amongst women against me and I can’t go to,” the former IPS officer said.
The case that Thakur was referring to is an attempted suicide by a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman outside the premises of the Supreme Court on August 16.
The man succumbed to his injuries while the woman sustained 85% burn injuries.
The woman alleged rape by Bahujan Samaj Party MP Atul Rai in 2019.
Atul Rai has been in judicial custody for the last two years.
Thakur was given compulsory retirement following a decision taken by the Union home ministry in March.
