Union minister Narayan Rane has been arrested by a team of Nashik police on Tuesday.

Rane has been arrested for his controversial remarks against Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Narayan Rane became the first union minister to be arrested in 20 years.

Narayan Rane is the union minister for micro, small and medium enterprises.

Rane failed to secure a last-minute reprieve from the Bombay High Court, which rejected an urgent hearing on his petition seeking quashing of the for three FIRs lodged against him.

Multiple FIRs have been filed against Narayan Rane over the union minister’s comment on slapping Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. 

“It is shameful that the Chief Minister does not know the year of independence. He leaned back to ask about the count of years of independence during his speech. Had I been there, I would have given him a tight slap,” Rane had said. 

Meanwhile, workers of Maharashtra’s ruling Shiv Sena and the opposition BJP clashed on the streets in Mumbai over Rane’s controversial remarks. 

Narayan Rane’s comments sparked protests by Shiv Sena leaders and workers.  

A clash broke out between the Shiv Sena members and BJP workers outside Narayan Rane’s residence in Mumbai’s Juhu.
