India, in its first win in six years in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, have beaten Bangladesh, thanks to a stellar performance from skipper Sunil Chetry.
India defeated Bangladesh 2-0 in the second round match of World Cup Qualifiers played in Qatar on Monday.
A Sunil Chetry double ensured victory for the Blue Tigers over Bangladesh in a Group E clash of the second round 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2023 AFC Asian Cup joint qualifiers at the Jassim Bin Hamad stadium in Doha, Qatar.
This win takes India up into third place in Group E with six points after seven games.
Chetry scored the first goal in the 79th minute of the match and sealed the match in India’s favour by scoring the second goal in the added time after 90 minutes.
This win is also India’s first in 20 years in foreign soil in World Cup Qualifiers.
Notably, India is already out of contention of the FIFA World Cup to be played next year. However, its hopes are still alive to make it to the 2023 Asian Cup.
India will next lock horns with Afghanistan in their last Group match to be played on June 15.
