Scientists in China claims to have found a drug that could help in bringing the coronavirus pandemic to a halt.

As per an AFP report, researchers from China’s Peking University had isolated neutralizing antibodies from the blood of 60 recovered coronavirus patients for usage in the drug.

The director of the university’s Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Genomics Sunny Xei said that the drug has produced good results in animals.

“When we injected neutralizing antibodies into infected mice, after five days the viral load was reduced by a factor of 2,500. That means this potential drug has a therapeutic effect,” Xi added.

A study on the team’s research, published Sunday in the scientific journal Cell, suggests that using the antibodies provides a potential “cure” for the disease and shortens recovery time.

He said that the planning for the human clinical trials is underway.

The researcher is hopeful that the new drug would be significantly useful in curbing the highly growing global coronavirus pandemic.

“We would be able to stop the pandemic with an effective drug, even without a vaccine,” he said.

It may be mentioned that there a number of experimental drugs and vaccines that are in the process of development in the hope of finding a standard and effective cure against the coronavirus pandemic.
