Assam

The Central government on Saturday directed the CBI to take over the probe into the case of alleged gang-rape and killing of a 19-year-old Dalit girl in Hathras.

The Centre issued a notification to the central investigation agency days after Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath recommended a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the incident.

A media report quoted officials as saying that the notification has been marked to a suitable branch of the CBI.

After taking over the probe, the CBI sleuths along with the forensic team will visit the crime scene at Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, the officials said.

The Dalit girl breathed her last at a hospital in New Delhi on September 29.

She was gang-raped and assaulted on September 14, 2020 by four upper caste men in her village.

The last rites of the victim girl were performed in absence of her family members for which the Yogi Adityanath-led UP government faced widespread criticism.

After the incident, the opposition parties and organisations continue to protest across the country demanding justice.
