Popular Bengali cinema actor Srabanti Chatterjee, on Thursday, quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). 

“Reason being their lack of initiative and sincerity to further the cause of Bengal,” said Srabanti Chatterjee while announcing her decision to quit BJP.

Chatterjee had joined the BJP earlier this year just before the Assembly elections in West Bengal. 

According to reports, the actor-turned-politician is likely to join the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC). 

Earlier, Srabanti Chatterjee had contested the West Bengal Assembly elections unsuccessfully from the Behala Paschim constituency on a BJP ticket. 

She lost to the TMC candidate by a massive margin of over 50 thousand votes.

Several Bengali actors and singers, who had joined the BJP ahead of the polls have quit the party. 

The most prominent among the Bengali celebrities to quit the saffron party was Bollywood singer-turned politician Babul Supriyo, who won the Asansol Lok Sabha seat twice and served as union minister. 

Babul Supriyo had quit the BJP last month and switched over to the TMC.
