Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently made contradictory statements to the media in which he first stated that the University would be converted into a technical institute and the jobs and degrees would be taken care of and then he retracted to say that he was planning something bigger and better for the University and that the degrees had no value as the University did not even have a Vice Chancellor.

Talking to media persons during the protest, AASU’s District Education Secretary Abani Kumar Gogoi said, “Question has been raised over the government’s slogan ‘Beti Bachao Beti Parhao’ as Assam’s Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is planning to close the one and only women’s university in Assam.”

Gogoi questioned, “Why Education Minister Sarma playing with the future of the students of Assam?”

The AASU leader also said that they oppose the plan of Education Minister Sarma to establish a technical university by destroying Assam’s only women’s university in Jorhat.

Gogoi also questioned over the role of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal regarding the fate of the Assam Women’s University.

He said, “We are surprised at the silence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in this matter. Why are they playing with the future of students of Assam when they are said as next pillar of the State.”

Apart from the students of Namrup College, the protest was also joined by the President of the Namrup AASU Regional Committee, Kalpajit Gogoi, Secretary Manash Jyoti Changmai, AASU District Education Secretary Abani Kumar Gogoi and many other people of Namrup.
