Five patients were killed and six others were injured as a fire broke out in the ICU of a Covid19 hospital at Rajkot in Gujarat early on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his deep condolence at the demise of the patients and wished quick recovery of the injured.

“Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to a hospital fire in Rajkot. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate tragedy,” PM Modi tweeted.

“Praying for a quick recovery of the injured. The administration is ensuring all possible assistance to those affected,” he added.

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani also expressed grief over the incident and announced Rs 4 lakh ex gratia to next of kin of those who died in the incident.

The chief minister also ordered a high-level probe into the incident.

According to police, the fire broke out in the ICU of the Uday Shivananda Hospital, located in Anand Bungalow Chowk of Mavdi area in Rajkot.

The fire broke out around 12:30 am on Friday.

A media report quoted Rajkot city police commissioner Manoj Agarwal as confirming that five patients died and six others were injured in the incident.

The police officer claimed the fire was doused within half-an-hour.

The fire service personnel, who rushed to the spot after receiving a call, reportedly rescued 30 patients from the ICU.
