ATK Mohun Bagan defender Boris Singh Thangjam has tested positive for COVID-19, making it the first case of the infection among active high-profile footballers in India.

The 18-year-old footballer hailing from Manipur was to undergo strength and conditioning training in Bengaluru ahead of the new Indian Super League (ISL) season.

Thangjam underwent a COVID-19 test, which turned out to be positive.

Sources close to the player, however, have informed that no symptoms have been visible yet.

He is in a stable condition and is observing isolation protocols in his home.

Thangjam was a key member of Indiaโ€™s FIFA U-17 World Cup squad last season and subsequently attracted eyeballs with his impressive performances in the I-League.

Although he was a consistent performer for Indian Arrows for two seasons, the youngster is yet to make his first-team debut for ATKMB in the ISL.

Thangjam had appeared for the teamโ€™s reserve side last season in the Durand Cup.

Thangjam had been earmarked as a huge talent ever since he caught the All India Football Federation (AIFF) scoutsโ€™ eye after he led Manipur to the U14 national championship title in 2013.

Thangjam was also part of the India U20 team beat Argentina 2-1 in the COTIF tournament in Spain under Floyd Pintoโ€™s tutelage.
