The Morcha has alleged that the State Government has imposed the ban without really assessing the stock and supply capacity of the organic vegetables in the State.
SKM leadership while addressing the media in gangtok on Monday said that a study must be carried out to ascertain the number of farmers interested to do organic farming instead of merely going into the statistics of organically certified farmland in the State.
It further said that the government should impose the ban in a phased manner after proper assessment.
The SKM also said that issues like lack of manpower and irrigation facilities in the farmlands also need to be addressed.
The Morcha further claimed that the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was kept in the dark by not apprising him on the ground reality prompting exemption of three items, carrot, tomato and green chilly from the ban list.
Regarding the deployment of SIMFED vehicles to procure vegetables from the growers and market, the SKM questioned as to why the government is encouraging the agency instead of the farmers themselves.
