Members of Cachar district Youth Congress on Thursday gheraoed Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) and shouted slogans for the ouster of the BJP-led board for their inability to run the affairs of the town.

More than a 100 youths of the Congress party rallied up to Silchar Municipality Board’s office near Sadarghat and shouted slogans in unison for dissolving SMB and pass on the baton to the Ward Commissioners of the Congress party for smooth running of this office.

Demanding the ouster of SMB’s Chairman, Niharendu Narayan Tagore, these NSUI members said if a chairman cannot give the salary of the Grade IV employees for the past seven months, just imagine as to how their state of affairs would be, informed Javed Akhtar Laskar, president of NSUI, Cachar district.

Speaking to Northeast Now he said, “Today we have asked all employees of SMB to stop work and support our protest. They have failed miserably and if they cannot run this organization, let them pass it to us for we would show them how it is done.”

He added, “Today we have reached here at 9:30 am and saw more than 80 percent have already reached their work station. On any other day, they don’t reach here before 12 noon. Everyone should thank us to see such a change,” Javed Akhtar Laskar said.

Supporting this protest senior leader of the Congress party, former Minister of Assam, Ajit Singh, pointing his gun at the municipal board, said, “When PM Modiji speaks about Swacch Bharat, here in Silchar it is practically zero. For the past seven months the employees have not got their salary. Just imagine, if they don’t get, how they will feed their families. Today’s protest is the first step. We will give an ultimatum. If they cannot bring about a change, then we would go for a massive protest in the days to come.”
