The youngest Sainik School in India, Mizoram’s Sainik School Chhingchhip will start admitting girl cadets from the new academic session. This Mizoram school will be an example of gender equality in the country, for the first time.

Mizoram Governor Lieutenant General Nirbhay Sharma, expressed his happiness over the Centre’s decision to allow admission of girl students. Sainik School Chhingchhip is the 27th school which was set up to counter rising attrition in the defence forces, especially at the officer level.

Nirbhay Sharma who is a supporter of this decision said, “This shows that there is equal opportunity for development in Mizoram and the State leads the nation in gender equality and empowerment of women.”

The Sainik School Chhingchhip has already invited applications for admission into sixth standard for girl cadets. An entrance exam will be held on January 7, and girls born between July 2006 and July 2007 will be eligible for the entrance exam.

The Sainik Schools are a system of schools in India established and managed by the Sainik Schools Society under Ministry of Defence. They were conceived in 1961 by  VK Krishna Menon, the then Defence Minister of India, to rectify the regional and class imbalance amongst the officer cadre of the Indian Military, and to prepare students for entry into the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Naval Academy.
