Women of the North East are talented, says Manipur governor

“The women of the North East, particularly women of Manipur are highly talented and they deserve to be sufficiently empowered with the digital technology for a space in this highly competitive world,”said  Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla  while launching the first Digital Literacy and Online Safety Programme for young girls and women in Imphal on Wednesday.

State social welfare minister, Nemcha Kipgen and Chairperson Rekha Sharma of National Commission for Women (NCW) attended the launching programme in Imphal wherein Governor Dr Heptulla also expressed her pleasure to be part of the pilot project to raise awareness among 60,000 women in universities across major cities of the country on safe and responsible use of internet, social media and e-mail.

Recalling that the Digital Northeast Vision Document, 2022 was launched in Guwahati on August 18, 2018 with the objective to improve digital connectivity and infuse digital literacy in the NE States with rest of country, she said the programme will enable trainees to differentiate between credible and questionable information circulated digitally.

Stating that the number of internet users among women is few in India due to lack of digital awareness and literacy, she said there was need to solve the problem of lack of inclusion of women in the Internet using population through technology.

State Social Welfare minister Nemcha Kipgen said the launch of Programme is for the women of North East, especially for uplifting and digitally empowering the lives of women folks of Manipur.

In her address, Chairperson Rekha Sharma of NCW said that women were empowered because of digitalization. Safety of women is a top priority with the knowledge to use internet safely and cautiously.

The nationwide campaign which is aimed  at sensitizing women and capacity building to help navigate in the internet space,  also intends to empower women to protect themselves and actively respond to issues and incidents like cyber crimes.
