A high level team of central observers are currently in Assam to observe the progress of different centrally sponsored Agricultural programmes including the National Food Safety Mission (NFSM) being implemented in several districts of the State.
The six member team headed by Dr K Manoharan Director of Jute Development Corporation, Kolkata and Dr R Bhagawati Chief scientist of Paddy research Center at Gerua in Kamrup (Rural) district of Assamon Thursdayvisited the farm fields of hybrid Maize and Summer Paddy in Darrang district.
While visiting the field of community farming in around seventy five hectares of land involving 190 local farmers at village Niz Rangamati under Banglagarh Agriculture Circle of the District Agriculture Department interacted with the farmers to know their grievances regarding technical support. The farmers explained with the support of the local Agriculture Department including using government supplied high yielding seeds, they have been doing well and expect to achieve a production of nearly twelve quintels of Maize from each bigha of land and thus earn an income of rupees ten thousand within a period of 140 to 150 days .
The team of officials assured the farmers all necessary support from the government including the short falls of the demand of subsidized Power Tillers for the farmers. The team enjoyed the company of the farmers and had refreshing delicious traditional dishes made of locally produced curd and juggery (unrefined sugar made of sugarcane) .
The team also visited the cultivation of summer paddy at village Bhaluk khowapara used by 110 farmers in 40 hectares of land and highly appreciated the initiative of the village farmers.
They also appreciated the program implementation system and maintenance of all the data and information by District Agriculture Office. A team of District Agriculture Officers led by District Agriculture Officer Nila Kanta Deka and Agriculture Development Officer Deba Kumar Sarma accompanied the visiting team. Earlier the visiting team held a discussion with all the officers of the District Agriculture Office and took stock of the progress in the agricultural sector in Darrang district.
