The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, RK Singh, will launch ‘Saubhagya’ scheme for Meghalaya on Friday.
The scheme will be launched at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Central Library, Shillong in the presence of Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Meghalaya Power Minister James K Sangma and other officials.
Singh will also hold a meeting with the Chief Minister.
On Saturday, the Union Minister will visit Assam and review the ‘Saubhagya’ scheme at Guwahati.
The Union Ministry of Power had launched the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana – ‘Saubhagya’ on September 25, 2017.
Under ‘Saubhagya’, free electricity connections to all households (both APL and poor families) in rural areas and poor families in urban areas will be provided.
Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) has been designated as its nodal agency for the ‘Saubhagya’ scheme.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma along with his State Power Minister James K Sangma recently called on Union Power Minister Singh to discuss on the power scenario. The Union Minister has set the agenda that as early as possible all villages in Meghalaya should be electrified.
Union Minister Singh assured of all cooperation from the central government to strengthen the electricity system in Meghalaya.
Singh also asked Meghalaya to take advantage of Atal Jyoti Yojana to put up 2000 solar streetlights in each constituencies of the State, also to tap potential of solar energy by putting up roof top solar panels in Government establishments and institutions.
