Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba on Friday reviewed the security scenario in Assam besides the progress of updating of the National Register of Citizens.
Addressing media in Guwahati, Gauba asserted the security scenario in Assam has improved and all security agencies are working together with greater energy. He also emphasized strengthening road and riverine connectivity with bordering country to encourage cross-border trade.

Earlier, before the media briefing the Union Home Secretary along with the Registrar General of India and the Joint Secretary (North East) of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) also held a meeting with the NRC officials to review the progress of the work which was followed by a meeting with the strategy group of the Unified Command to review the overall security scenario of the State
It is the maiden visit of union home secretary Gauba to Assam after assuming the office. His visit is significant against the backdrop of increased subversive activities of ULFA (I), particularly in Upper Assam and also possible law and order problem after the publication of the first draft of the NRC.
He said updating NRC is a massive exercise closely monitored by Supreme Court and appealed to media to disseminate the proper picture about NRC updating process to the public. He allayed the fear that those who do not figure in the first draft to be published on December 31 should not panic as there would be ample scope to redress their claims and objections.

To thwart any possible fall out after the publication of draft NRC, the centre has already deployed 50 additional companies of paramilitary forces in Assam.
The Union Home Secretary also met Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and informed that the Chief Minister had proposed construction 400 km four-lane road along Indo-Bhutan border from Jamduar to Sikariganj.
