Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday inaugurated the 28th Baresaharia Bhaona at Pakamura Pathar in in Jamugurihat under Sonitpur district.

Saying that spiritual vibration creates from this soil Union Minister said “a big salute to the cultural icon of the State, Dr Bhupen Hazarika, who is one of the great sons not only of Assam but also a legend of India”.

Speaking on the occasion, Singh also mentioned about three noted icons of Assam, who were from Sonitpur district – Rupkonwar Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, who made the first Assamese film from this soil, Kalaguru  Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Nata Surya Phani Sarma – whose contributions to the cultural field cannot be forgotten.

Union Minister Singh said, “I have never attended such type of traditional historic event which was started 220 years back. Salute to the legends and Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. I heard about him and today I have seen how his way of life has been followed by the Assamese society and for that I heartily congratulate the people of entire Assam.”

Singh also urged the people to maintain the cultural harmony.

The organizing committee president and local MLA Padma Hazarika welcomed the Union Home Minister and in his welcome speech, Hazarika said that the people of Jamugurihat would never forget this event as a Union Minister attended and graced the occasion.

In his speech, Hazarika recalled the unfortunate incident of December 24, 2014, the massacre of Adivasis which started in Biswanath Chariali when Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh immediately reached here and instructed the security forces to launch ‘Operation Black Out’. Since then in the northern bank of the Brahmaputra never such incident has happened. He thanked Union Home Minister Singh for his quick response.

Singh was accompanied by State Cabinet Minister Ranjit Dutta and Tezpur Lok Sabha MP Ram Prasad Sarma in the progrrame here.

“In December 2014, I said there’s no place for violence in the land of Assam. I’m happy to say that law and order situation has improved in Assam and the era of violence is over. There’s no place for violence in democracy. Democracy is run by discussion and talks, not by guns,” said Singh.

Citing the arrest of Karti Chidambaram, who is son of former Union Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, Singh said, “CBI is a credible investigating agency and it is doing its job. I don’t want to comment further.”
