Two ULFA (I) rebels surrender in Tinsukia district

Two rebels of the proscribed militant outfit ULFA (I) have surrendered at Pengeri in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.

Police sources said two ULFA (I) rebels—Pranabjyoti Bora alias Ridip Asom and Rohit Quli alias Pol Asom—surrendered before the security forces on late Tuesday night at Tekerigaon in Pengreri area in Tinsukia district.

Police said while Pranabjyoti hails from Dhemaji, Rohit is from Sadiya.

They have deposited two Chinese grenades to the security forces.

Sources said they surrendered following the security forces launched massive operations along Arunachal border in Tinsukia district.

“On getting information about the presence ULFA (I) militants, the police, army and CRPF launched joint operations in Tinsukia district along Arunacl Pradesh border. As a result, two ULFA (I) rebels, deserted the group, and expressed their desire to join the mainstream,” a police official said.

The two rebels had entered Tinsukia district from its bases in Myanmar via Arunachal Pradesh.
