“Bamboo leaf tea” produced in Tripura is in high demand from other States. 

Samir Jamatia – a native of Agartala, engaged in bamboo leaf tea production, told Northeast Now: “The bamboo leaf tea produced in Tripura, having rich medicinal values has attracted importers from various corners of the country”.

He said, “The first consignment of around 500 kg bamboo leaf tea has already been supplied to an importer from Delhi at a price of Rs 120 per kilo”. 

“Another 3-4 kg have been purchased by a man from Madurai who stayed in Tripura for three days and studied the entire production process,” said Samir.

Samir toured extensively different countries and spent many years in China studying various bamboo-related works. 

He said that experts believe that bamboo leaf tea is rich in antioxidants and antibiotic properties while the presence of huge amounts of silicon in tea leaves helps keep hair, skin, and nails healthy as well as strengthens bones and teeth. 

“The bamboo leaf tea comes with a different flavour. Around 21 types of bamboo are grown in Tripura and tea can be produced from all the types,” said Samir. 

He said that right from the collection of young leaves, processing of tea to packaging is done in the state.

Samir expressed hope that someday the bamboo leaf tea of Tripura would make its presence felt in the global market.
