Tripura Assembly Speaker Rebati Mohan Das had rejected the resignation of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) MLA, Brishaketu Debbarma on procedural grounds.
However, with Brishaketu Debbarma officially joining TIPRA, the IPFT will now try to persuade the Speaker to accept his resignation.
Brishaketu expressed displeasure over the functioning of BJP-IPFT government in the state and shifting of stands of IPFT.
Notably, there has been a massive erosion in the support base for the BJP-IPFT coalition government in Tripura, especially in the tribal belt.
With Brishaketu Debbarma, quitting IPFT and joining TIPRA, which has emerged as a new regional power in Tripura – “a force not to be considered lightly” – it is being speculated that many more tribal leaders from the IPFT will jump ship soon and join TIPRA.

On the other hand, there has been a growing ‘dissidence’ within the BJP in Tripura. Several top leaders of the BJP are in talks with the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is trying to revive its fortune in the state, especially after the party’s astounding victory in the recently held Assembly elections in West Bengal.
While, the TMC seems to be emerging as a strong opposition to the BJP in Tripura, even without a legislator in the Assembly, the TIPRA on the other hand seems to be becoming a cause of concern for the IPFT.
