Agartala: Tension broke out in Manghalkhali village under the Jubarajnagar Assembly constituency in North Tripura on Thursday after a protest over alleged police inaction turned violent, with a residential house set on fire, police sources said.
The unrest began when locals gathered in front of a mosque and blocked the main road leading to the village, demanding the immediate arrest of three persons accused in a recent violent altercation that resulted in the death of Khaled Ahmed.
The accused have been identified as Jubed Ahmed, Saddam Hussian and Sabbir Hussain. Protesters alleged that despite several days having passed since the incident, no arrests had been made. โThey are responsible for the death of Khaled Ahmed. The police should have acted immediately,โ a protester said.
On receiving information, Additional SP of North Tripura, along with the Officer-in-Charge and the SDPO of Dharmanagar, rushed to the spot with a police team. Following assurances of prompt action against the accused, the protesters withdrew the blockade.
However, amid the tension, a group of miscreants allegedly set fire to the house of Sabbir Hussain, located about 1.5 kilometres from the protest site. Fire tenders were deployed and managed to bring the blaze under control.
SDPO Dharmanagar Jayanta Karmakar said the deceased was a local businessman who had financial dealings with the accused. The dispute reportedly arose over unpaid dues, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation.
โThe victim sustained grievous injuries in the assault and was hospitalised. He later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment,โ Karmakar said.
