A Tripura police official was killed after her was knocked down by a vehicle belonging to suspected drug smugglers at Kalamchoura in Sonamura town on Thursday night.
Police said sub-inspector (SI) Durga Kumar Hrangkhawal was hit by a speeding vehicle carrying drugs and subsequently succumbed to his injuries on Friday in a hospital.
The incident took place when 39-year-old SI Hrangkhawl tried to spot three vehicles travelling at high speed.
“The police team led by Hrangkhawal was looking for three vehicles as they were carrying contraband drugs. One of the vehicles hit the police official. They fled from the spot after the incident,” said an official.
The SI sustained grievous injuries after he was hit by the vehicle.
He was first taken to Boxanagar Primary Health Centre (PHC), and was later referred to Tripura Medical College and Hospital and further to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital where he succumbed to injuries on Friday morning.
Tripura law and education minister Ratan Lal Nath, DGP Akhil Kumar Shukla and other top police officials paid their last respects to the police offiacil.
Tripura government has announced Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family members of the cop.
DGP Shukla said that a hunt is on to nab the smugglers and their vehicles.
He said the incident is not an accidental death. “It is a case of murder,” he added.
The deceased police officer leaves behind his son, daughter and wife.
