Agartala: Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Customs Department, seized around 180 grams of morphine valued at approximately Rs 18 lakh from Agartala Railway Station in Tripura and apprehended one person in connection with the recovery, officials said on Tuesday.
The operation was carried out in the railway station area of West Tripura district on May 20, they said.
The apprehended person was identified as Arun Kumar Chakma, officials said.
According to Assam Rifles, the narcotic substance was recovered during a coordinated operation conducted jointly with officials of the Customs Department.
The seized contraband and the apprehended individual were later handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and legal proceedings, officials added.
Security agencies have intensified surveillance and joint operations in Tripura in view of concerns over cross-border smuggling and narcotics trafficking through the northeastern region.
No further details regarding the source or intended destination of the seized morphine were immediately available.
