Agartala: Tripura Police arrested a vagabond on charges of killing one of his friends and co-workers.

According to police, a scuffle broke out between the accused and the deceased late on the night of March 22, leading to the killing at Lalmatia Shopping Complex under East Agartala Police Station, a police official said.

According to Subrata Debnath, Officer-in-Charge of East Agartala Police Station, the incident came to light on March 22 when the body of Krishna Bhattacharjee, also known as Chandan, a resident of Pratapgarh, was found inside the shopping complex premises.

A post-mortem examination later confirmed that the death was caused by internal injuries, he said.

Following an investigation, police arrested the accused, identified as Mitan Saha alias Mon. Preliminary findings revealed that both the deceased and the accused were daily wage labourers who worked at construction sites and had been leading a vagabond life. They reportedly used to spend their nights at the shopping complex.

โ€œDuring the course of the investigation, we noticed an injury mark on the right eye of the accused, which raised suspicion. It is believed that he sustained the injury during a scuffle with the deceased,โ€ Debnath said.

During police remand, the accused allegedly confessed to the crime. He told investigators that a personal dispute between the two led to a physical altercation on the night of the incident, during which he struck Bhattacharjee with the handle of a hoe, resulting in fatal injuries.

Police said the accusedโ€™s statement was recorded before an executive magistrate.

Both individuals were reportedly habitual consumers of alcohol, which investigators believe may have contributed to the scuffle.

Further investigation into the case is underway, police added.
