Tripura govt to compensate U-23 cricketer Mithun’s parents

The Tripura government will compensate and extend support to the family of cricketer Mithun Debbarma, who died on Wednesday while playing cricket.

Mithun played for the Tripura U-23 cricket team.

The talented cricketer of the state died during a practice session at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Stadium in Agartala.

Media reports quoted teammates as saying that Mithun had collapsed in the field while attending a practice session.

He was immediately taken to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

A media report quoted Tripura sports and youth affairs minister Manoj Kanti Deb as saying: “We, at the state government, are deeply saddened by his death. We shall provide all possible support to his family.”

The government is considering to provide financial compensation which would be decided by the cabinet, he said.

Jayanta Debnath, coach of the U-23 state team told the media, “We are saddened by the incident and want to express my deepest sympathies to the bereaved family.”

“We at Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) shall decide what to do in this regard,” said debnath.

Mithun was supposed to be included in the state team for the CK Naidu Tournament.

He was a core member of the 25-member squad of the U-23 cricket team of Tripura.

He reported before the coach Jayanta Debnath at MBB Stadium on Tuesday at 1 pm.

After the arrival of all the players, the coach started a fitness session for 10 minutes.

According to reports, during the fitness session, Mithun rushed to drink water, but he collapsed in the field.

His teammates immediately took him to the IGM Hospital but he passed away while on the way to the hospital.
