Guwahati: Four labourers were killed and six others injured after a stone-laden truck overturned near the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Longtarai Valley subdivision of Tripuraโs Dhalai district on Sunday, May 17.
Longtarai Valley Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sonacharan Jamatia said the vehicle was moving from Chawmanu towards the Biju Border Outpost, carrying stone chips meant for infrastructure work in the border area.
He explained that the road accident took place on a steep and poorly maintained stretch where the truck struggled to climb. While the driver tried to reverse the vehicle after failing to ascend, it lost balance and toppled over.
Labourers seated on top of the load were thrown off, and the shifting stones came crashing down, trapping them beneath the debris. Those inside the cabin were not affected in the same way and survived.
Soon after the incident, personnel from nearby Border Security Force camps reached the location and carried out rescue efforts. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, where medical staff declared four of them dead on arrival.
Authorities have confirmed the identities of the four victims as Balidhanjoy Tripura (47), Majida Tripura (50), Bathojoy Tripura (39), and Narjoy Tripura (36).
Among those injured, one individual remains in a serious condition. The majority of the survivors were inside the vehicleโs cabin when the accident took place.
An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the accident.
