Agartala: As many as eight individuals who had saved the lives of accident victims by shifting them to nearby hospitals within the golden hours had been awarded under the Rah-Veer scheme at the civil secretariat on Monday, Tripura Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said.

โ€œWe had a scheme which was previously known as the Good Samaritan scheme under which people who extend help to accident victims were rewarded for their service. The scheme was recently renamed after Rah Veer scheme; the one time financial assistance provided to the person who showcased the goodwill gesture had also been increased from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000. In Tripura, the district administration recommended names of eight persons for their contribution to protect the lives of accident victims during the critical hours. All of them had been felicitated during the state road safety council meeting,โ€ the Minister told reporters.

According to Chowdhury, Chief Minister Manik Saha will soon chair another meeting of the Road Safety Council which had been constituted to curtail road traffic accidents all over the state. โ€œI have instructed the District Magistrates to present a detailed report on the present status of the road traffic accidents in their jurisdiction. We have also discussed multiple issues pertaining to improving the traffic management and how accidents could be prevented,โ€ he added.

Officials from Transport Department, High Education, IG Law and Order Manchak Ipper and other top officials from concerned departments participated in the meeting. โ€œAll District Magistrates and superintendents of police also attended the meeting through video conferencing,โ€ the Minister added.

The Minister hoped that with effective strategies, the state would definitely chart ways to reduce road traffic accidents all over the state.
