Agartala: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday carried out searches at the residence and business premises of Agartala-based trader Shahjahan Miah as part of an inquiry into suspected financial irregularities, according to sources.
ED officials reached Miah’s residence in the Western Club area along Akhaura Road early in the morning and questioned him. A separate team conducted a search at his shop in Battala Fitting Market.
Central security personnel were deployed at both locations during the operation, with security forces assisting the ED teams.
Sources said the agency is examining suspected illegal financial transactions and possible dealings involving foreign funds. Miah’s alleged connections to activities in border areas are also reportedly being examined.
According to the sources, the trader had been under observation for several days before the searches were carried out.
The operation was reportedly conducted by the ED without prior coordination with Tripura Police.
Miah was questioned at both his residence and business premises during the searches. No major recovery had been reported until Wednesday afternoon. However, officials reportedly collected documents and other materials that could be relevant to the inquiry.
When approached, Miah said he was unaware of the reasons behind the ED action.
The ED has not issued an official statement on the searches so far. Consequently, the precise nature of the allegations and the grounds for the operation have not been officially disclosed.
The documents and materials collected during the searches are expected to be examined by the agency to determine whether they have any connection with the suspected financial irregularities or alleged cross-border transactions.
The searches continued into Wednesday afternoon, according to sources.
