Tripura police achieved a major success on Sunday in its mission to make the state drug-free with the arrest of a drug kingpin from Kolkata.

IGP law and order K V Sreejesh said, “Tripura police could arrest one Bidhan Roy, one of the fugitive drug mafias and kingpins of the state from the Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International airport at Dumdum in Kolkata. He was operating from Kolkata and we were following him for quite some time. Today at around 1.30 as he was trying to fly to Hyderabad, our people arrested him from the airport.”

He added that the fugitive drug mafia belongs to Pratapghar area on the outskirt of Agartala and was leading the smuggling of contraband and marijuana in the state. Realizing that he could fall into police dragnet at anytime, Bidhan had fled to Kolkata from where was operating.

After following some legal formalities in Kolkata the drug mafia will be brought back to his home state. He is under interrogation and likely to be produced in the court on Monday.

Roy tried to get out on bail but his plea was rejected. With inputs from the arrested drugs mafia the police may get clues of many other involved in the drug peddling in the state.

Only a day ago the state chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb while speaking to a reporter at Delhi expressed his concern that the menace of drugs in Tripura is bigger than that of Punjab.
