Agartala: The CPI(M) Tripura State Committee on Wednesday held a meeting in Agartala to review the political and organisational situation in the state and chalk out its programmes ahead of the upcoming Village Committee and municipal elections.
The meeting was held at Dasarath Deb Bhavan in the presence of CPI(M) national general secretary M A Baby and other state leaders.
State secretary and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury said the meeting was part of the party’s regular organisational process and would review political, economic and other significant developments in Tripura over the past month.
Chaudhury said the committee would also assess programmes organised by the party and its mass organisations during the period, including the August 10 ‘Jail Bharo’ programme, with discussions focusing on its strengths and shortcomings.
The meeting is also expected to discuss the party’s political and democratic programmes in the run-up to the Village Committee and municipal elections, as well as the forthcoming Assembly session, he said.
The CPI(M) leadership would seek views on programmes to be taken up on issues concerning public interest and what it described as undemocratic measures by the government. Baby is also expected to brief the state committee on the political situation in the country following the recent Central Committee meeting.
The meeting also comes amid allegations by the CPI(M) of attacks on opposition party offices and workers in the state.
Earlier on Wednesday, Chaudhury visited the CPI(M) office at Jogendranagar and spoke to local party leaders and workers following an incident of vandalism. He said those involved would not be spared and that the names of those responsible were being identified.
Chaudhury alleged that repeated attacks on opposition party offices and workers reflected what he described as a growing disregard for the democratic environment in the state. He said those involved in such incidents would eventually have to face the consequences.
The CPI(M) leader also alleged that attacks on political opponents and vandalism of party offices were raising questions about the democratic environment in Tripura. He said the party would intensify its political and democratic protests against such incidents.
The party’s state committee is expected to finalise its organisational and political programmes while taking into account both state-level issues and the wider national political situation.
